FOURTH GRADE PROGRAM FOR GREATER LITTLE ROCK
COST: Last year, the actual cost of eight dollars was reduced to six dollars per student through the efforts and financial assistance of a devoted group of local literacy and Arabian horse enthusiasts. At this early date in the year we anticipate approximately the same cost. We know the cost will not exceed eight dollars per student and will possibly be considerably less. Remember the cost includes a hardback copy of The Black Stallion, “Hoof Notes”, the Black Stallion Movie and a live equine performance featuring “The Black Stallion”.

Field Trip Lunch - Students, Teachers & Bus Drivers bring their own lunch & drinks
Times – Matinee Performances are 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Buses arrive by 9:45 a.m.
Location – Barton Coliseum, Little Rock, Arkansas
Funding Ideas – Title 1, 5A Funds, PTA support, corporate sponsors, school fund raisers, students pay as a field trip, etc.
Busing – Schools provide transportation to Barton Coliseum

School Standards – The new curriculum has been designed to meet teaching standards.
Chaperones - Two adults per class (this includes the teacher plus one additional person) may attend the field trip at no charge.
Overall Purpose
The Black Stallion Literacy Project motivates children toward successful lives by helping them discover the joys of reading and wonders of learning through the magic of live horses and Black Stallion books by Walter Farley.
Program Goal
To spark the imagination of first grade students so they will want to learn to read, and to motivate fourth grade students so they will know the enjoyment of reading.
Objectives:
● Offer classroom teachers a unique method of motivating students for the learning experience
● Utilize research based experiential education, which connects animals and children in the learning process
● Involve families by encouraging children to include family members in their reading process
● Reach children on many levels and provide the opportunity of kinesthetic learning
● Allow classroom teachers the flexibility of using their own curriculum ideas or selecting activities or curriculum ideas from the variety of tools provided by the BSLP. These are designed to help teachers meet teaching standards in the following areas: literature, reading, writing, vocabulary, math, geography and the arts. 
Fourth Grade Program
4th Grade Student Materials:
- A copy of their very own book to keep, The Black Stallion
- A copy of their own Hoof Notes - includes a
personal poster of The Black Stallion
- A field trip to attend a special equine theater
performance featuring Walter Farley’s Black Stallion in a dramatic musical play with lots of energy, action and excitement.
4th Grade Classroom Materials:
- Supplemental curriculum and activities designed to meet teaching standards based on the literature
book, The Black Stallion available on the www.bslp.org website
- 6’6" stand-up & 20" x 30" poster of the Rearing Black Stallion (w/coming soon banner, in one box)
- Each School receives one copy of Frances Ford Coppola’s movie, The Black Stallion
- A copy of selected pages of The Black Stallion movie screenplay for students
- Storyboard sketches from the movie, illustrated and blank for students
- A “Teacher Guide” for each teacher, an evaluation form and access to the website, www.bslp.org
- Background about the author, Walter Farley
4th Grade Method:
- Classroom teachers coordinate through school districts to order & distribute materials and for field
trip attendance of the equine theater performance.
- The live equine performance is the required finale’ of the classroom program, timeframe to read the
book & participate in curriculum activities before the performance about 2-3 weeks. The BSLP
encourages teachers and students to share the reading in an effort to complete the book before
attending the live performance.
- After receiving shipment of materials and books, teachers announce program will be "Coming Soon"
with poster and banner displayed in their classroom.
- Once program begins, each teacher displays 6’6" stand-up and distributes books to each student.
- Reading assignments should include chapters 1 through 5 recommended for The Black Stallion (45
pages which include the "Rescue" chapter)
- Hands on film making: students may adapt pages of The Black Stallion book into written format for a
screenplay using the included screenplay as an example OR students may create storyboards
drawings) from the book using the screenplay storyboard sketches provided AND/OR teachers may
utilize their own creativity for related activities as described in the objectives above.
- Students should view the movie in full or part for compare and contrast discussions prior to the
equine performance.
- Distribute Hoof Notes to each student & encourage them to read the books to parents and family
members at home.

The programs culminate with a field trip for the respective 4th grade program. Schools provide transportation, lunch and drinks for all students, teachers and bus drivers. Repeating schools have materials but may re-order Extra Materials for a fee of $25 per set of the stand-up and poster to be delivered with the book shipment. 4th Grade Performance seating space is provided for 2 chaperones per class. Please provide exact number of adults attending for the 4th grade performance as arena seating is limited. Please provide payment with enrollment/billing contract or date the check will be sent. Be sure to include the number of books you will need for new students. Once orders are placed and materials are shipped refunds cannot be made.
